The PDF uses your form's existing theme, colors, and font. If you update your form design, future PDF exports automatically reflect the new look. Forms and PDFs made on our free plan carry a ‘ ’ badge. You can remove it by upgrading to Tally Pro.

What the PDF looks like

The PDF renders a read-only version of your form with the submission's answers filled in. It keeps your form's layout, theme, and branding intact, so the document feels like a natural extension of your form — headings, questions, and answers all included.

  • Page breaks in multi-page forms are visually shown as dividers in the PDF document.
  • Custom thank you pages: If you've set up a custom thank you page, it's included at the end of the PDF. The default thank you page is excluded.
  • File uploads: Uploaded files appear in the PDF as filenames only. To access the files themselves, open the submission and use the file download actions.
  • Payment answers: If your form collects payments, the PDF includes basic payment info (amount and status). For full payment details, check your Stripe dashboard.

What's excluded from the PDF

To keep the PDF clean and focused on the respondent's answers, a few block types are left out:
  • Hidden fields — used for passing data, not for display
  • Calculated fields — internal logic, not answers
  • Conditional logic blocks — the output already reflects the logic's result
  • Default thank you page — excluded so the PDF ends on the submission content

Via integrations

Every Tally submission includes a Submission PDF link and a Submission Preview link.
  • Submission PDF: a download link for a PDF copy of the submission.
  • Submission preview: a web link to view the submission's answers in your browser.
You can use these in any of Tally's integrations to automatically route, store, or attach PDFs or previews as part of a larger workflow.

Some examples of what you can do with it:
  • Save the PDF to Google Drive or Dropbox via Zapier or Make
  • Attach it as a URL to a record in Notion or Airtable
  • Pass it to any endpoint via Webhooks
  • Build a multi-step automation in n8n — for example, when a signed contract is submitted, send the PDF to your client via email and create a follow-up task in your project management tool
Tally supports this for: Zapier, Make, n8n, Webhooks, Notion, and Airtable.

How to create PDFs with electronic signatures

If your form includes an electronic signature block, the respondent's signature is rendered directly in the exported PDF. This makes it easy to create signed documents — like waivers, contracts, or consent forms — that are ready for filing or sharing, without any extra tools.
Add a /signature block to your form, and every PDF export will include the signature alongside the rest of the submission.

How to personalize PDF documents with answer piping

Use answer piping to insert a respondent's answers (like their name, company, or address) directly into text blocks, headings, and labels throughout your form. When exported as PDF, piped values appear as filled-in text, so the document reads like a personalized contract or agreement rather than a list of questions and answers.
For example, in a freelance contract form, you could mention the client's name and project details into the contract text itself. Type @ in any block to mention a previous answer.

Use cases for PDF export

Save a permanent, portable copy of every registration, application, or intake form submission for your files. Here are a couple of ready-to-use templates.

Client deliverables

Turn a completed client intake form or job application into a polished document you can attach to an email or case file. The PDF keeps your form's branding and layout, so it looks professional without any extra formatting. Great for freelancers, agencies, or consultants who want to share a clean summary with clients.

Contracts and compliance

Keep offline copies of contracts sign-ups, consent forms, legal and regulatory records or waivers. Combine with electronic signatures to create fully signed documents ready for filing. Perfect for businesses that need an audit trail without paying for dedicated contract software.

Orders and bookings

Generate a PDF copy of order forms, booking confirmations, or order confirmations. Each PDF includes the customer's details and order info exactly as submitted, so it doubles as a receipt. Enable self email notifications with Attach PDF with answers and every order lands in your inbox as a ready-to-file document.

Freelance invoices

Build an invoice form with line items, quantities, and a calculated total — then send your client a branded PDF copy the moment they submit. Combine calculated fields for the math, answer piping to address the client by name throughout the document, and respondent email notifications with Attach PDF with answers so the invoice goes out automatically.

Estimate and quote forms

Collect project details from a client, then automatically send both yourself and the client a clean PDF copy of the request. Use self email notifications to get your copy for quoting, and respondent email notifications to send the client a confirmation of what they submitted. Zero back-and-forth, no extra tools.

Frequently asked questions

Can I export all my form submissions as PDFs at once?
Not yet. Right now you can download one submission at a time from the submissions table. If you need to export all responses in bulk, you can download them as a CSV file instead.

Can respondents download their own submission as a PDF?
Not directly from the form — PDF download is available to form owners from the submissions table. To give respondents a copy, enable respondent email notifications and toggle on Attach PDF with answers. They'll receive a branded PDF of their submission in the confirmation email automatically.

Can I attach a PDF to the respondent confirmation email?
Yes. Open your form settings, go to Respondent email notifications, and enable Attach PDF with answers. This is a Tally Pro feature.

Can I customize what appears in the PDF?
Not at the moment. The PDF renders your form as-is, with the submission's answers filled in. You can control the look indirectly by updating your form's theme and design. If you want a fully custom PDF layout, you can use our Zapier or Make integration.

Can I print a Tally form submission?
Yes. Export the submission as a PDF using the Download PDF action, then print the PDF from your browser or PDF viewer.

Can I remove the ‘ badge’ from my PDF?
Yes, this is possible by upgrading to Tally Pro.
